Hey there everyone👋🏾! Doki here, your Data Fellow at Pollicy 😄.
I’m super excited to share my experience from the recent Data Ladies session we had. The session was titled “Data Science Toolbox” and boy, was it a blast! We had such an amazing time learning and growing together.
The Data Ladies initiative is a program designed to empower women through data science education, and I’m proud to say that this session was no exception. So, grab a cup of coffee or ‘chai’ and let me take you on a journey of what went down!
But before that, Data Science, Data Science, Data Science! It’s been such a buzzword of late. What is it though? Hmmm, one could say it’s where math whizzes and computer geeks unite to change the world, one data point at a time. Don’t know what a data point is? This is your sign to join us for our future sessions 🙂
Now, on what happened:
It was a Wednesday. 26th of March to be precise. The session, ‘Data Science Toolbox’ aimed to provide a foundational understanding of Data Science. I reached the venue, National ICT Innovation hub, quite early(10:00am) for an event scheduled to be at 2:00pm. As the facilitator of the session, the nerves were quite high.
But, I shouldn’t have been nervous. The participants started to trickle in and I got to talk to them and they were absolutely lovely people to meet. So, the nerves died down.
We started with an introduction to data science, what it is used for and saw the different applications of it in the real world. For example, logistic companies who use data science to select time-efficient delivery routes.
“What can one expect as a data scientist?” Our session answered this question by looking at the data science pipeline where we summarized the steps that might be involved in a data science project. These steps included defining and understanding the business problem as well as Data acquisition.
Data scientists use a variety of tools in the trade. We had a glimpse into some of the tools used for the different data science tasks, tasks such as when one is visualizing data and when one needs to store data collected in an efficient manner.
Woah. We really had a long discussion there. So…
Over the lunch break, we had some lighthearted moments and got to know a little more about each other. As mentioned earlier, absolutely lovely people.
Data Science requires some programming knowledge. So participants were taken through an ‘Introduction to Python’ session where we had a walkthrough of the basics of the Python programming language such as variables and data types.
To wrap it up, the Data Ladies session was an incredible experience filled with an engaging discussion, hands-on activities and new connections. I’m thrilled to have been a part of it and grateful for the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for data science with such a wonderful group of women. I can’t wait to see the impact that this and other sessions will have on their careers and personal growth.
And for those who missed out, don’t worry, there will be more sessions to come!
Stay tuned for updates and join us on this empowering journey through data science education⭐
